AI-RvsToast

Toast is your register.
AI-R is your operating system.

Toast sells a POS. AI-R bundles the POS with the six other tools most restaurants buy around it. Honest head-to-head, with sources.

The 30-second answer

Pick AI-R if: You want one platform for POS, scheduling, online ordering, delivery aggregation, food cost, reviews, and your assistant — AIR at $199/mo, or AIR Express at $299/mo with DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub connected, with the add-ons already in the price.

Pick Toast if: You're a chain over 20 locations with deep payment-processor integration needs, or you specifically want Toast's hardware-locked ecosystem and 24/7 enterprise support and don't mind a 1–3 years contract.

The honest take: Toast is a strong POS product with a deep hardware ecosystem. AI-R is the whole restaurant in one subscription — the POS plus the six other things most operators are already paying for separately.

The fundamental difference

AI-R bundles what Toast quotes as add-ons.

Toast's entry POS pricing is not the same thing as the restaurant's all-in operating bill. Once KDS, scheduling, online ordering, delivery, payroll, marketing, devices, implementation, and processing rules enter the quote, the comparable number moves into the hundreds per month.

Where AI-R wins outright

Five things AI-R does differently

Each one is live today. Read them beside Toast's own pricing page and decide for yourself.

1. Smart Receipts → reorder QR loop

Convert guests into direct orders.

Receipts and bag-insert QR paths point guests back to your own ordering page. Once DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub integrations are connected, AIR adds marketplace-specific attribution and channel reporting, so you can see what each channel costs you and what it sends back. AI-R's price is the plan you pick, published on the pricing page.

2. Multi-processor support (Square + Stripe)

Choose your processor. Switch when rates change.

Toast publishes its own processing at ~3% on the free tier (third-party reported). AI-R works with Square or Stripe — your choice. Your processor or ours: Square or Stripe at the rates they publish, or AIR's own processing, with AIR's fee shown in the rate calculator. Change processors when rates change and keep the same platform.

3. An assistant that knows your cuisine

Your assistant reads a Thai casual kitchen differently from a QSR pizza counter.

Your assistant answers from a knowledge base of segment economics, tax rules, operator playbooks, and cuisine-specific benchmarks, and from your own service, invoices and menu. Every answer carries the receipt it came from, so you can check it.

4. The iPads you already own

Bring your own hardware, and keep owning it.

Toast ships its own terminals — ~$849 onboarding and hardware to ~$2,645, per third-party guides (verified 2026-08-24). AI-R runs on any iPad. Already have one? You're done. Need new tablets? Buy them direct from Apple at retail and own them. Replace them on your schedule.

5. Month to month

$199 or $299 a month, month to month. Beta: $99 a month for 12 months.

Toast contracts run 1–3 years with early termination fees (third-party guides, verified 2026-08-24). The AI-R subscription bills month to month. AI-R Pay card processing is the one thing with a term: a 1-year agreement with NMI, the processor, not with AIR. If we stop earning your business, we lose it. That's the right incentive for both sides.

Honest counter

When Toast is the right pick

We're not for everyone. Toast wins on these three operator profiles.

Multi-unit chains over 20 locations

Toast has deeper enterprise tooling, dedicated success managers, and proven ops at 100+ locations.

We're focused on independent operators and emerging multi-unit (1–10 locations). Above ~20 locations, Toast's enterprise tier likely fits better — for now. Talk to us anyway if you want a 2027 path.

Operators who want hardware-bundled simplicity

Toast ships you a sealed box. Plug it in. It works.

If you don't want to think about which iPad to buy or how to set up a printer, Toast's all-in-one hardware bundle is the simplest path. AI-R requires you to bring (or buy) your own. Worth it for the cost savings, but it's an extra setup step.

24/7 phone support is non-negotiable

Toast offers 24/7 phone tree. AI-R support is 8 AM – 1 AM EST.

Our hours cover every minute your restaurant is realistically open. But if you specifically need 3 AM phone support — operators in 24-hour markets like Vegas, NYC late-night — Toast covers that gap. Ask before you commit.

Migrating from Toast to AI-R: how it actually works

Setup is free for as long as it takes. Here is the process:

  1. Export. Pull your menu, staff, modifier, and historical sales data out of Toast with its standard reporting export. Or send photos and a PDF of the menu — AI-R reads it into items and modifiers for you to check line by line.
  2. Set up. Menu, printers, staff, floor plan and house rules, together, for as long as it takes. Nothing is billed during setup, and you can see every step on a project page of your own.
  3. Go live. The first 30 days are free from the day you download AI-R. Restaurants go live in waves of ten, so you pick the night.
  4. Toast contract still active? Set AI-R up while it runs out. Many operators time the cutover to their Toast renewal date so there is no early termination fee.
  5. After the first 30 days. $199 or $299 a month, month to month. Beta: $99 a month for 12 months.

One hundred restaurants, ten at a time. October 12.

Setup is free for as long as it takes. The first 30 days are free from the day you download AIR. Then $99 a month for 12 months, with calls past 200 at $0.50. Then the full plan price. Want DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub connected? That is AIR Express: $100 for the 30 free days, then its full price of $299 a month. The AIR subscription is month to month. Cancel any time. AI-R Pay card processing is the one thing with a term: a 1-year agreement with NMI, the processor, not with AIR.

Sources + methodology. Toast pricing pulled from pos.toasttab.com/pricing as of October 5, 2026. Toast's public pricing page confirms flexible packaging, hardware and implementation variability, and paid product suites. Toast's Point of Sale plan is $69 a month, and its Starter Kit is $0. Starter Kit is new single locations only; transaction fees and terms apply. Every add-on in the table above is quoted per restaurant, so we show it as a quote rather than a number we cannot source. A "full feature match" means adding KDS, scheduling, online ordering, delivery aggregation, inventory, marketing, and loyalty, before payment processing, hardware, and per-transaction fees. Toast contract terms are reported as 1–3 years by third-party guides (verified 2026-08-24); specific terms vary by deal.
